Community - Moss Creek Plantation
Jackie Riggin's Featured Community is Moss Creek
Plantation. Jackie has lived and worked in
Moss Creek Plantation for 14 years.
Moss Creek
Plantation is known throughout the area as a premier residential golf
club community, with a beautiful marina and state-of- the-art tennis
facility.

Just off 278, before
the bridge to Hilton Head Island is
the entrance to Moss Creek Plantation. Your first
introduction to the community is something you might
expect to see in one of the upscale horse communities
of America. What you may not know is that Hilton Head and Bluffton
have several well-established equestrian plantations, and Moss Creek
is one of them. Moss covered oak trees pepper the 10 acres that
envelop Moss Creek Equestrian Center, which is equipped with a 20
stall barn, owner's and student's tack room, large hunter/jumper
ring, dressage ring, indoor/outdoor wash racks, and spacious
paddock. Surrounding the jumper ring are centuries old oak trees
that provide cool shade during the summer months. |

In the
fall, residents gather ripened pecans filling the ground from the
nearby pecan trees, and use them for delicious pies and cakes during
the holiday season. “You can’t miss Moss Creek,” says Dunes
Marketing Group Agent Jim Thompson who is also a resident of the
plantation. Prior to buying in Moss Creek, he lived on the Island.
“I fell in love with this place because of its natural beauty and
amenities. We are big on natural beauty here.”
“Moss Creek's uniqueness is its topography,” says Gateway Realty
agent Jackie Riggins, also a resident of the plantation. “Having
lived in the area for 30 years, I am proud to call Moss Creek home
for the past 14 years.” It is evident that the original developers
conserved the beautiful trees and marshes, when creating what is
considered by residents "nothing short of paradise". Moss Creek
property owners have had complete ownership of all of the amenities
since the late 1980's.
Private Marina
Moss Creek Plantation is one of the few communities that has its own
marina. Located on Mackay Creek, it flows into the Colleton River
and directly into the Intracoastal Waterway. Boat owners and
non-owners that enjoy the call of the ocean are welcomed into the
Moss Creek Yacht Club. The club hosts more than a dozen events
throughout the year including the Commodores Ball, the Blessing of
the Fleet, and a three-day trip to Charleston. There are 75
deep water wet slips available for boat owners, electrical hook ups,
private dock boxes, a private boat ramp, and kayak and dingy
storage. There are fishing and crabbing docks for seafood lovers who
occasionally prefer to catch a fresh supper. The area boasts the
best blue crabs on the eastern seaboard. Overlooking the marina is
the Bostwick Pavilion, a comfortable meeting place for residents who
enjoy watching the changing tides. Within the pavilion is a
community library. Nearby is a unique children's playground, under
the canopies of 200 yr.old live oaks, and one of three community
swimming pools, which are open most of the year |

Dog Heaven
Another unique amenity in Moss Creek Plantation is designed for the
four-legged species. A dog park
adjacent to the Bostwick Pavilion is the happening place for the
neighborhood dogs. But according to Jim, the social affair is not
limited to man’s best friend. “It’s tailgating for dogs, ”he says.
Many owners meet at the park with picnics of wine and cheese and
socialize during their dog’s play. Miles of leisure walking, jogging
and biking trails meander through the property, some with stops at
protected sites. Like most communities in the Lowcountry, preserving
and respecting nature and its claim to the land is a priority at
Moss Creek. Located in the center of the community is the Fording
Island Nature Preserve. The 11 acres can be accessed by two
boardwalks that overlook the marsh and tidal creek. Observation
decks make it easy to view indigenous wildlife, trees, shrubs and
plants in their natural habitat. Several small islands make up the
rich 36-acre Blue Heron Sanctuary. With a mixture of fresh and
brackish water, visitors can get up close and personal with wading
birds, ducks, fish and even alligators. |

Life on the
Plantation
“The natural beauty and wonderful amenities are only surpassed by
the wonderful residents who call this magical place home,” says
Jackie. “Moss Creekers are known for their kindness and generosity
to any neighbors in need.” Although the residents consider Moss
Creek a well kept secret, Moss Creek Plantation is known throughout
the area and in enthusiastic golf circles as a premier residential
golf club community. With two courses, the South Course designed by
golfer George Fazio and the North Course designed by his nephew,
golf architect Tom Fazio, both are renowned for the spectacular
scenery, marsh-side layout, elevated greens and challenging holes.
Team round robins, annual tournaments and club championships create
a social atmosphere as well as a rewarding game of play.
Tennis Magazine named
Moss Creek one of the best places to retire. The private Moss Creek
Tennis Center offers comprehensive tennis programs for all ages. The
center has seven fast-dry composition courts and a full calendar of
events including specialty clinics, mixers, USTA Team practices and
more.
Homeowners in Moss Creek are a mixture of full and part-time
residents. Homes prices range from
$300,000 to $3,000,000.A few resale home sites are still available,
with prices ranging from $140,000 to $575,000, for buyers to build
their own dream home in a very special community. “Home sites are
strategically nestled beside pristine marshes, and a marina whose
deep water channel leads to the Intracoastal Waterway,” says Jackie.
“Others view the manicured fairways and large freshwater lagoons.
Whatever the view, most sites are large and beautifully treed.”
“This is a
completely private community, not a resort,” adds Jim. “We have
something for everybody.”
The Moss Creek Community Association (MCCA) is the original fun
organization, adds Jackie. “Eleven events are held during the year,
including wine dinners, Jazz Night, dinner/theatre, sunset cruise,
and
an authentic luau. You will also find a large group of members
tailgating at the fall POLO Match, under a large, private tent. This
fun loving, energetic group has more than 400 members, and I
presently serve as president of this wonderful club.” With two golf
courses, tennis, equestrian center, marina, dog park, and miles of
leisure trails, Moss Creek Plantation residents certainly have a
unique opportunity to enjoy life in this beautiful "bit of
paradise".
